NCAA Betting Picks: Georgetown Hoyas at DePaul Blue Demons
Tuesday, January 17, 2012
by Joe Rodriguez
No. 12 Georgetown Hoyas is not alone in discovering that life within the Big East is a tad more difficult than the pre-conference slate. Even the unranked teams in the Big East can present a big challenge, as the Hoyas found out in back-to-back losses to West Virginia and Cincinnati.
Georgetown had nearly a week off to prepare for St. John's on Sunday and used that time to fix the defensive deficiencies and execution problems that had plagued the team in the previous two contests.
The Hoyas ended up cruising to a home win and look strong as they head to Rosemont, Ill., on Tuesday for a date with DePaul.
The DePaul Blue Demons, like all Big East schools, believe they can win at home and proved as much with a triumph over Pittsburgh earlier this month. Things have not gone well since with three straight losses.

SBG Global Sportsbook currently have the Hoyas listed as 9-point favorites versus the Blue Demons.
Georgetown Hoyas (14-3): The Hoyas needed 17 second-half points from senior Chris Wright to escape with an 86-75 victory over DePaul at home last season, while Jason Clark and Austin Freeman scored 21 apiece. Clark is the only member of that trio still with the team and he has been inconsistent in a leadership role. The senior is just 4-of-22 from beyond the arc in Big East play and has committed seven turnovers in the past two contests. Strong rebounding and defensive efforts led to Sunday's 69-49 victory.
DePaul Blue Demons (10-7): Cleveland Melvin scored 29 points against the Hoyas as a freshman last season and continues to improve, leading the team in scoring (18.0) and rebounding (6.2). Fellow sophomore Brandon Young struggled to nine points on 4-of-10 shooting in the 2011 meeting but was the star in the Blue Demons' defeat of Pittsburgh on Jan. 5 with 26 points, six assists and five steals. Young's 5-of-20 performance from beyond the arc in the last three games has been part of the problem in three straight road losses.
1. The Blue Demons are last in the Big East in scoring defense, allowing 74.6 points.
2. The Hoyas lead the Big East in 3-point defense, holding opponents to 28.2 percent.
3. DePaul makes 7.5 3-pointers on average - second in the conference.
BASKETBALL PREDICTION: Hoyas 79, Blue Demons 68.
